We as a family are trying something new, we are looking up foods we would like to try and make at home. New things, out on a limb things. Take up time to make things. so I kept thinking of the Monte Cristo, The sandwich was a childhood favorite of mine and I always try and order it out, but I wanted to try something new with the kids. this is a great sweet, salty creation that fills you up and leaves you wanting more. my hubby is so glad I made this as our first, try it at home creation. We h
1 stick of butter cut in half
2/3 cup water
1 egg
2/3 cup all-purpose flour
1 3/4 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
8 slices white bread
4 slices Swiss cheese
(we used an Italian 4 cheese blend)
4+ slices turkey
4 + slices ham
1 tablespoon confectioners' sugar for dusting
Seedless raspberry jam
Place 1/2 stick in skillet on med/low While it is heating, make the batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg and water. Combine the flour, baking powder and salt, whisk into the egg mixture until smooth. Put aside in refrigerator.
Assemble sandwiches by placing a slice of turkey on a slice of bread, a slice of ham on another, then sandwich them with the cheese in the middle. Cut sandwiches into quarters, and secure with toothpicks.
Dip each sandwich quarter in the batter so that all sides are coated. Fry in the hot butter until golden brown on all sides.
Remove toothpicks when you flip and arrange on a serving tray. Dust with confectioners' sugar just before serving.
Spoon out jam into small glass dishes and microwave for 25 seconds, use this to dip your sandwich into.
Watch your heat so you don't burn the butter.
You can deep-fry these, but we don't have a fry daddy.
